Science Explains How Injuries Happen in a Car Accident, Attorney Discusses
Blame it on kinetic energy. Dr. David Logan, senior research fellow from Melbourne’s Monash University Accident Research Center, says modern safety technology can only do so much to protect us.
“The whole purpose of a modern car is to absorb as much of the energy in the structure of the car by deforming the structure of the car and preventing that from going into your body,” he said. “But, in higher speed crashes – and for some cars, and some kinds of crashes – it’s inevitable that you will have to absorb some energy in your body.”
Where can it hurt? Pretty much everywhere
Common injuries include:
- A broken collarbone caused by the seatbelt (even so, the belt is doing its job by preventing more serious injuries).
- Broken ribs.
- Punctured lungs.
- Ruptured organs, which can spill acids, waste products and other substances inside your body.
- Pelvic fractures.
Head trauma. “You can live with injuries to most other parts of your body, but you can’t live with injuries to your head,” Logan said. “It’s the one that causes the greatest damage to your quality of life in the longer term.”
