How many car accidents will I likely be involved in during my lifetime?
Nobody plans on being involved in a car accident when commuting to work or going for a Sunday drive. Even the drivers who behave irresponsibly don't think that there will ever be any consequences for their actions.
The reality is, most drivers are involved in car accidents about every 17 years, according to the car insurance industry. Some drivers are involved in crashes more than others. This figure is just an estimate for the average driver.
Millions of collisions happen each year across the United States. They range from parking lot fender benders to fatal highway catastrophes. Some are caused by careless mistakes, sometimes by otherwise good drivers. Most serious crashes, however, are caused by reckless and negligent behavior.
Each day, drivers endanger other road users by using phones behind the wheel, driving drunk, or driving well above the posted speed limit.
How likely am I to be in a crash in North Carolina?
According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), North Carolina saw an upward trend in the total number of crashes from 2013-2018. Crashes involving fatalities and injuries fluctuated over the five-year period, however.
Here are the figures:
- There were 220,271 crashes in 2013 and 281,685 in 2018.
- From 2013-2017, NC had an average of:
- 248,204 crashes per year
- 76,780 injuries caused by crashes per year
- 1,248 fatal crashes per year
In 2018, North Carolina had 7,509,231 licensed drivers. That means that your chances of being in a crash is nearly four percent each year. While this may not seem like much, crashes are usually unpredictable.
Car accidents are unpredictable -- but preventable
According to NCDOT, the leading causes of crashes in 2018 included:
- Drunk driving: 11,345 total crashes, 7,602 injuries, and 411 fatalities
- Speeding: 21,339 total crashes, 10,188 injuries, and 312 fatalities
- Lane departures: 63,776 total crashes, 30,137 injuries, and 754 fatalities
- Distracted driving: 54,046 total crashes, 24,178 injuries, and 121 fatalities
