Obtaining A Police Report After An Auto Accident In Wilmington NC: An Attorney Explains

Wilmington auto accident attorneyIf you were involved in an accident in North Carolina, the first thing to do is call the police. An officer will arrive, take all the information from the parties involved, and file a police report. Filing a police report is not the same thing as filing a claim with your insurance company.

Always file a police report. Even if the accident seems minor

A police report gives you and everyone else involved an official record of the accident. This means that there will be a legal record of the accident to refer to later, should there be any dispute about what happened. If there is a dispute, you will legally be protected by that report. What is more, under certain circumstances, failure to report an accident to the police in North Carolina can result in having your license suspended.

Police officers are also highly trained at recognizing signs of trauma or other effects from an accident, some or all of which we might not recognize at the time. Accidents are frightening. We can find ourselves rattled in the aftermath, which can affect our judgment. A police officer is a neutral and objective third party who can help us get to the hospital, even if we don’t recognize our own need for medical care at the time.
