Speeding Takes a Tragic Toll on Drivers in NC

According to a recent report by ValuePenguin, 33% of fatal crashes in North Carolina involve someone who was speeding. The information is based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System from 2010 to 2019.

Speeding driver

Contrary to what you may expect, deaths increased during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic even as drivers were logging fewer miles. The number of miles driven dropped 19% in 2020, while 1,506 people died on North Carolina roads, an increase of 8% and the most in 13 years.

State officials say this indicates that motorists incorrectly thought fewer people on the roads meant they could take more chances with regard to speeding and other reckless driving behavior. Too many of them continue to drive recklessly and cause preventable car accidents.

North Carolina drivers are paying for their speeding in other ways. The state ranks third in the country, with insurance costs leaping 38% after a single speeding conviction. That’s much higher than the national average of 22%. On average, annual rates went from $1,506 to $2,076.

And then there are speeding fines. North Carolina drivers convicted of speeding can expect to pay at least $188 in court and administrative fees in addition to a fine. Driving 0 to 5 mph over the speed limit means a $10 fine, while 16 mph or more costs $50. The fines increase to $250, plus costs, for speeding in a school or work zone. Speeders also accumulate points on their license.

Speeding toward jail

Speeding in North Carolina is a misdemeanor that also can lead to time behind bars. A violation can result in a reckless driving conviction and up to 30 days in jail. If the violation results in the death of another person, a charge of death-by-vehicle is possible, with a conviction of up to 160 months in prison.

Despite the risks and penalties associated with speeding, too many negligent drivers try to justify their reckless behavior.

Their so-called reasoning includes:

  • They are impatient toward delays, slower drivers and traffic congestion.
  • They absolutely must reach their destination on time.
  • They feel less individual accountability behind the wheel.
  • Self-confidence. They mistakenly believe they can multitask – drive while talking on a phone, texting, eating, etc.
  • The rush. They think driving fast is a thrill, even if it means putting others on the road at risk of an accident.
